Gossip Girl: "Damn that Mother Chucker!"

Leighton MeesterNothing makes me happier than new Gossip Girl ads.  Despite what the CW wants us to believe, it's not the most popular show on television, but it certainly has the greatest ad campaigns.  Last season brought us the infamous OMFG commercials, and last week the network unveiled a racy set of posters that I wrote about here.  Now there are new commercials to go along with the posters, focusing on the show's hook-ups and featuring blurbs from critics warning viewers that the series is "a nasty piece of work" and "very bad for you."  Are these clips brilliant or trashy?  You be the judge.

The most interesting part of these fast-paced montages is trying to figure out who our favorite characters are hooking up with.  The first clip shows Serena (Blake Lively) pulling Dan into the bathroom of a bus for a good time, then features the reformed bad girl romping with both Nate (Chace Crawford) and a sexy lifeguard.  Not at the same time, of course.  This is still an 8pm show.

The next commercial finds Blair (Leighton Meester) attempting to get over Chuck by making out with whoever she can find.  First she kisses some guy at a White Party, then lip-locks with someone at a bus stop while Chuck looks on.  Perhaps in an attempt to make Blair jealous, Mr. Bass introduces her to a sexy older woman named Catherine, who Nate later sleeps with.  Those Upper East Siders certainly get around, don't they?

In case you're wondering what the song is in the commercials, it's a French pop ditty called "Ca Plane Pour Moi" by Plastic Bertrand.  I had it downloaded on my iTunes faster than you can say "Damn that mother Chucker!"

When season one of Gossip Girl came to a close, we were led to believe that Nate and Serena might get together, while Blair and Chuck (Ed Westwick) were going to go their separate ways with new people.  These commercials make it seem like we should expect the unexpected.  Will Dan (Penn Badgley) and Serena rekindle their romance?  Will Blair and Chuck continue making each other jealous by flaunting new flings?  We'll have to wait and see.

While it's easy to make the case that these ads are too racy for Gossip Girl's teen demographic, I find them to be genius.  They're hip, sexy, fun, and even take jabs at those who find the series too trashy for its own good.  The ads may not be for everyone, but they're certainly effective.

Gossip Girl will kick off its second season on September 1.
