Jennifer Love Hewitt, lead actress on
Ghost Whisperer, was sued by Handprint Management over breach of contract for $350,000 on Friday, April 27 in the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Handprint Management, Hewitt’s former management company, claimed that the actress owes the company money for negotiating her starring role on CBS’
Ghost Whisperer, where she plays Melinda Gordon, an antique store owner who has the ability to communicate with earthbound spirits. According to the lawsuit,
Ghost Whisperer led Hewitt "back to national prominence as a television star" and revived her acting career.
Hewitt joined the said company in 2002 and left in March 2005 but paid the management company in full for the first installment of
Ghost Whisperer. However, Hewitt refused to pay for the series’ second season, which prompted the management company to take legal action against the singer-actress. Based on court documents, "California law requires that even television stars comply with contract law… Love Hewitt 'knows what she did last season,' and knows that she owes Handprint its 10% commission this season too."
Hewitt, a 28-year old native of Waco, Texas, was first exposed to the music industry at the age of three. Eventually, she appeared on television commercials and shows like
Party of Five, Time of Your Life, and movies like
I Know What You Did Last Summer, Sister Act 2, Can’t Hardly Wait, If Only, and
The Truth About Love just to name a few. As a singer, she released several albums and singles, which became gold hits not only in the United States but in Australia as well.
When asked to comment on the charges, Bob Wallerstein, Hewitt’s attorney said that, “the lawsuit is without merit,” and refused to comment any further.
As of the moment, there is no other details exposed regarding Hewitt’s case. Meanwhile, fans can catch
Ghost Whisperer every Friday at 8:00 pm ET/PT on CBS.
