In 1967 she was cast for Love is a Many Splendored Thing where she played Iris Donnelly Garrison. Ten years later, Charleson was cast for the role of Monica Webber Quartermaine in replacement of Patsy Rahn in the soap opera General Hospital. It was a turbulent time for the soap when she got cast as the hair and wardrobe people at ABC were on strike, so she had to bring her own clothes and do her own make up. Moreover, the producers of General Hospital never informed the cast and crew about Rahn's dismissal, so she had to be the one to let them know. After all the struggles and challenges, however, Charleson's appearance on the soap actually helped its ratings shoot up to the number one spot.
