The rumor mill has been hard at work especially with the comings and goings of actors in the world of soaps.  More often than not, what starts as tittle-tattle eventually turns out to be something very close to the truth.  Like other soaps, General Hospital has already been a casualty of much grapevine among its allegedly departing cast members. Previously, there was some buzz about Jason Gerhardt leaving the show.  Rumors turned into reality when his character Cooper Barrett was killed off the canvass in a recent storyline.  Now, speculations are surrounding yet another cast member and he comes in the form of Maurice Benard.

Warning: May contain spoilers

Reports about Benard's alleged exit stems from the news that his contract on General Hospital is up this summer.  According to the 44-year-old actor, his future as Sonny Corinthos remains uncertain.

“I don't know what I need to do.  I can't tell you right now," Benard, who admits that portraying a dark character like Sonny “takes its toll,” told Soap Opera Digest.

Benard's current storyline on General Hospital focuses his character's relationship with Kate (Megan Ward).  After Kate and Sonny went down memory lane, Sonny decide to propose to Kate. They eventually get caught in a big discussion, in which Sonny pushes Kate way and suffers the consequences.  In today's episode, Sonny tells Kate that he's finally over her and later on, hooks up with Claudia Zacchara (Sarah Brown).

Benard, who started his soap career as Nico Kelly on All My Children from 1987 to 1989, joined General Hospital in August 1993 in which he also won a Daytime Emmy for his manic depressive mob boss role.  Additionally, he was also credited for TV shows and movies like Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter, Her Wicked Ways, Restraining Order, and To Face Her Past.
Meanwhile, fans can find out what this General Hospital actor has to say about his alleged exit, including gossip about the possibility of joining another soap in the February 5 issue of Soap Opera Digest.
