Gene Simmons "Didn't Think Long or Hard" About Doing 'Family Jewels'

Simmons FamilyThe media has been relentless in their pursuit of celebrities in recent times, but this did not stop KISS frontman Gene Simmons from welcoming cameras into his home to shoot the now highly-followed A&E reality series, Gene Simmons Family Jewels.

“He didn't think long or hard,” Shannon Tweed said of her long-time partner's decision to appear in a reality show in an interview with eCentral.  “He said, ‘Come on in.'  It made me want to hang myself.”

“I would say that it's fair to point out that most celebrities live a double life. There's the public persona and then privately, they have relationships with farm animals,” Simmons interjected, adding that he and his family, on the other hand, have been willing to bare both sides to the public.  “I am who I am and we are who we are, take it or leave it.  You can't please everybody.  The show is mostly about who we are, how we lead our lives, and also what I do in business, where I go, what I do.  Very little of it is about KISS.”

For those who haven't been introduced to Gene Simmons Family Jewels, the show follows the Simmons family as they go about their everyday activities.  It features not only Gene Simmons and Tweed, but also their two children, Nick Tweed-Simmons and Sophie Tweed-Simmons, both of whom have managed to stay away from trouble despite all the pressures of living in the spotlight.

“The secret is not a secret,” Tweed said when asked what the secret to raising good children is.  “It's how to say “no” and mean it and how to say “yes” and mean it.  When the kids were growing up, they would try to play one parent against the other.  You have to have a unified front, and you have to not fight with each other in front of the children.  You have to show them that you're the boss and you mean what you say.  They could never change my mind about anything, so they never tried to beg me for things.”

As for the careers their kids will eventually decide to pursue, Tweed said she'll let Nick and Sophie, who will be adults by then, to make their own decisions about it.  Gene Simmons, meanwhile, said he wouldn't mind if they tried their hands in the music industry, for as long they maintain a proper work ethic.

“No lazy way out, no expecting somebody else to do it,” the 58-year-old Family Jewels star said.  “If they work as hard as I do, they'll have a great job whatever they do.  You have to love labor, not look for a job.  Don't get a job, love working, whatever you do.”
