Fringe has often been compared to shows such as The X-Files, Altered States, The Twilight Zone and Dark Angel, but cast member Joshua Jackson thinks that this is a little more than a lazy reference. The sci-fi series, which details the exploits of FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, scientist Walter Bishop, and his son Peter as they investigate aspects of fringe science, is “trying to be a hybrid of a few different things,” according to the 30-year-old actor.  On the other hand, Jackson hopes Fringe will eventually be used as a reference point when the next large sci-fi series debuts.

“I want to make this show excellent,” Jackson told TV Guide.  “I want it to be good enough that when the next sci-fi show comes along they compare it to our show – like they compare us to The X-Files. That’s what my focus is on the next couple of years.”

“There’s a lot of depth and frankly [the creators] are famous, notorious, infamous, however you want to say it, for populating their genre shows with these very rich dynamic humans.  And beyond J.J. and the team, I love the genre,” he added.

Best remembered as Pacey Witter on Dawson’s Creek, Jackson now plays Peter Bishop, Walter’s (John Noble) son with an IQ of 190 on Fringe.  And though he still gives credit to the teen drama that catapulted him to international fame, Jackson has found great pleasure in his present TV role, which is certainly a stretch from his previous academic underachiever character.

“I owe that [Dawson’s Creek] job, basically, my life.  I was 18, not sure if I was going to be able to carry on as an actor – and it’s an awkward phase for a young man,” he said.  “I was very particular about the thing that I came back for and [Fringe] lived up to its promise so far.”

Catch Joshua Jackson and the rest of the cast of Fringe when it returns in January on FOX.
