Last week's premiere of
Fringe didn't break any ratings records, but it certainly had a solid debut, with nearly 10 million people tuning in to indulge in the sci-fi craziness. More importantly, most people I've talked to truly enjoyed the pilot, which means that many of them will likely return for tonight's all-new episode. Now that the complicated setup of the series is out of the way, tonight's installment will give us some idea how the show will play out week to week. Can
Fringe deliver on the promise of its amazing first episode?
The pilot introduced us to wacky fringe scientist Walter Bishop, his genius son Peter, and FBI agent Olivia Dunham. The trio will be teaming up to investigate strange incidents every week, starting with tonight's freakishly bizarre pregnancy.
How much do I love the
Panic Room-style location markers in this show? Very much.
Fringe starts off in a hotel room, where a man and woman have just engaged in what the kids refer to as a booty call. The guy goes into the bathroom and prepares a syringe full of something that hopefully doesn't melt faces off, but he's soon interrupted when the woman, Loraine, starts screaming in agony. He drops her off at a nearby hospital and leaves her to suffer. A few minutes later, Loraine is dead and the doctors have cut a fully grown baby out of her stomach. Ever seen the movie
It's Alive? It's kind of like this, except the baby goes on a killing spree afterwards.
Agent Broyles (
Lance Reddick) heads up an investigative committee that also includes Massive Dynamic employee Nina Sharp. He tells her all about the three people he's assigned to the X-Files, and though she thinks a crazy doctor, his rebellious son and a stubborn FBI agent are a terrible team, she deals with it. Olivia, Peter and Dr. Bishop arrive at the hospital, where Broyles tells them that the baby aged rapidly before dying of “natural causes.” Four hours after he was born, the child became an elderly man and keeled over from old age. This sounds like a case for Dr. House!
