Friday night means it’s time for some football! The Dillon Panthers get off to a great start, because despite their problems over the week, Tim Riggins and Matt Saracen play like champions. With the score run up to 38-13, Coach Taylor decides to give J.D. McCoy a shot. The freshman phenom is every bit as good as they thought, throwing the ball far and accurate. Everyone is happy, except Matt and his grandma in the stands.

At the after party, Buddy is showing off a model of his new Jumbo-Tron which, according to Landry, is being financed by Mr. McCoy. Tami shows up and takes Buddy aside to say that as principal, she’s reallocating funds for the Jumbo-Tron to academics. As expected, Buddy’s face drops upon learning that his beloved giant TV will not become a reality.

Riggins apologizes to Lyla and credits her criticism of him for the reason he played so well, because he wants to prove he’s worthy of her. She accepts, and the two make out, professing their love for the whole party, including Lyla’s dad Buddy, who takes this as his second biggest disappointment of the night.

After the party, Coach Taylor drives over to the Alamo Freeze to pick up Smash for a late-night game of racquetball, or as Smash calls it, “the whitest sport in history.” Eric gets angry that Smash has quit, and he tries to talk to him about working together to figure out a new approach to football that doesn’t rely on the speed Smash lost due to the accident.

Eric says he wants this so bad because he needs something good to happen, but it does him no good if he’s the only one who wants it. Coach Taylor leaves the ball in Smash’s court, so to speak, and leaves.
