In what is possibly the most awesome news of all-time, ABC has ordered a pilot for a new series, S.H.I.E.L.D., based on the Marvel comic book organization featured in The Avengers. Even better? Joss Whedon is set to co-write and direct the pilot.

It seriously doesn't get any cooler than this.

Firefly is available on Amazon Prime.

As initially reported by Deadline.com, S.H.I.E.L.D. will focus on the Marvel peacekeeping organization featured in many comic books and in all of those Avengers-related movies. Don't remember S.H.I.E.L.D. specifically? It's the military-like organization headed by Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson in the films) that recruited the Avengers to save the world from Loki.

S.H.I.E.L.D. will focus on the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate (also known as the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division).

Written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen (the same team behind Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), production should begin right away. The same group, along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb will executive produce the pilot. Presumably we'll get a chance to watch S.H.I.E.L.D. by the fall of 2013.

No casting has been announced yet, but we probably cannot count on the casts of The Avengers and the other films to commit to a long-term TV project. S.H.I.E.L.D. regulars seen in the film include Nick Fury, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). Could any of them be in the TV version? What about the superheroes of The Avengers as guest stars? That would be cool.

Until this summer's Avengers success, Joss Whedon was far better-known for his television projects. Each of his four TV series -- Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse -- quickly reached the level of cult status. Ratings, on the other hand, haven't exactly followed Whedon's productions. With his connection to The Avengers made clear in this project, we can perhaps expect a change in overall popularity for the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot and (hopefully) series.

Do you want to see a S.H.I.E.L.D. television show? Which stars would be good for the series? Is this the kind of project you want to see from Joss Whedon? Do you think this kind of show could be a success? Leave your comments below!
