William Shatner, famed for television shows like
Boston Legal and
Star Trek, considers himself as someone who takes delight in cruising the highway with his sports car. Given his fervor for the road, he has decided to participate on ABC’s new celebrity reality show,
Fast Cars and Superstars.
Fast Cars and Superstars, which premieres tonight, June 7 at 8 pm ET, features Shatner as one of the 12 celebrity contestants who will train under NASCAR's Gillette Young Guns.
"There's a freeway here in Los Angeles, 405, and I tried going at top speed there," Shatner has told reporters during a Monday conference call. "So the idea of being able to drive as fast as you can without being assaulted by police had a certain appeal."
As for the other contestants on the show, Shatner has revealed that the rest of the participants were very enthusiastic. "Everybody was incredible. Everybody who agreed to do it knew the risks involved. This was a serious matter. And so everybody who came to do it came with intense motivation. There was a lot of intensity in that field and a lot of good people. A lot of people used to competition and willing to be a fierce competitor, but at the same time, equally desirous of meeting each other. So it was like a great party at the same time it had an intense core," Shatner has added.
On the other hand, he has also revealed that there were some contestants that were really difficult to compete with. "Their hand eye coordination by necessity had to be superior,” Shatner has said referring to professional athletes. “So I had to compete in some way. I think nerve or stupidity, yes, stupidity was my best weapon... I was able to compete against their hand eye coordination by being more stupid than they."
