Tom Amandes was born the sixth of 11 children on March 9, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois. A graduate of The Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago, Amandes is a self-confessed theatre jock who began performing at home and at school. His big break came in 1993 when he was cast as Eliot Ness in the television production of The Untouchables. He has since made guest appearances on
The Practice,
JAG,
The Guardian and
NYPD Blue. On the big screen, Amandes has appeared in
The Long Kiss Goodnight,
Brokedown Palace and
Dirty Deeds. He also does off-camera work as director of several episodes of
Everwood, where he also stars as Dr. Harold Abbott.
Dr. Harold Abbott, played by Tom Amandes on
Everwood, used to be the town's only physician until Dr. Andrew Brown and his family moved in. Conservative and a bit high strung, Dr. Abbott initially clashed with his new competition until the two earned each other's respect and became colleagues and trusted friends.
