As part of the SCI-FI channel’s Visions for Tomorrow public affairs campaign, the hit series,
Eureka, will return for its second season on July 10th with a nation-wide contest that will award a home energy-efficiency makeover. The contest is being sponsored by the network, the Alliance to Save Energy and the Edison Electronic Insitute.
The contest, which has been deemed The Eureka $mart House Energy Efficiency Challenge, will be launched during a 12-hour long
Eureka marathon on June 26th. Viewers of the marathon can expect to see a special on-air message from Zoe Carter (played by
Jordan Hinson), encouraging them to make their own homes more energy-efficient. The message will also ask the viewers to log on to
www.scifi.com/homemakeover for more information regarding the contest. In addition to contest details, the website will also give visitors some pointers on how to reduce energy bills while taking care of the environment.
The name of the contest was inspired by the “Smart House,” the area wherein the lead characters of
Eureka live.
In talking about the project, the SCI FI Channel’s Executive Vice President and General Manager Dave Howe said, "As a top ten cable channel reaching a progressive and forward-thinking audience, we're excited to be able to use one of our hit shows,
Eureka, to galvanize our viewers into making simple changes to the way they live that will have a tangible and long-term impact on climate change."
Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan said that their partnership with the cable channel has given them the opportunity to “empower millions of Americans to save energy and money in their homes while engaging directly in the battle against global climate change."
Callahan added, “You don't have to be a ‘superhero’ to have 'Energy-$avings Super Powers.' We will showcase smart, easy ways consumers can use energy-efficient technologies and measures to reduce utility bills and cut energy waste, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions simultaneously.”
The public is also encouraged to visit sixdegreechallenge.org, where they can “Test Their Energy IQ” and take part in the “6 Degrees Challenge” by committing to at least one concrete energy-efficiency action and urging others to do the same.
