For the 14th season of
ER, the producers are working hard to get many of its old cast members back on the show. Actor Noah Wyle, best known for his portrayal of Dr. John Carter on the medical drama, is expected to return for several episodes. This time around, Wyle's Carter is staying out of Africa.
"He'll be in Chicago in the ER, interacting with all our people," executive producer David Zabel told
TV Guide last month. Apparently, Carter is returning to the hospital in order to check out the Joshua Carter Center, a gift from his wealthy family, and to attend to a medical concern. In accordance with the return of Wyle's character,
ER is also looking to bring back actress Thandie Newton, who play's Carter's wife, Kem.
Zabel also told
TV Guide that they have spoken with actresses Gloria Reuben and Julianna Margulies about returns as well.
"Julianna's doing [
Canterbury's Law] now, but we can always write a story that can shoot in a couple of days," Zabel said.
Other names that the show is trying to recruit for its upcoming season are Eriq LaSalle, (Peter Benton), William H. Macy (David Morgenstern), and
Sally Field and Danny Glover, who have had runs playing Abby's (
Maura Tierney) mother and Pratt's (
Mekhi Phifer) father. Viewers may also catch another glimpse of
Laura Innes as Dr. Kerry Weaver and
Shane West as Dr. Ray Barnett in the new season of
ER.
Last but certainly not least, Zabel also commented on the possible return of actor George Clooney, saying, “We're always thinking of ways to bring Dr. Ross back on the show. And now might be a good time, because I hear George needs the work."
On the other side of the fence, news of an actor's departure from
ER has also surfaced. Early last month, TV Squad reported that Phifer will be making his exit sometime during the season. Prior to his departure, Phifer's Pratt will be dealing with personal issues, including contacting his father again and discussing his relationship with Betina.
