The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday at 8pm on CBS. Hosted
by Neil Patrick Harris, it looks like two shows will have a
stranglehold on the night:
Mad Men for Drama and 30 Rock for Comedy, both coming in with an overwhelming lead in total nominations.
But will they really prevail. Check out the nominees for the major
Emmy Drama categories below and who I think will win, then make your
own picks and watch along with me Sunday night.

Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
WeedsMY PREDICTION: 30 RockLast year the Emmys crowned
30 Rock and creator Tina Fey the top comedy, and this year, it will retain its crown. Hands down,
30 Rock is the very definition of Outstanding Comedy Series.
LEAD ACTOR:
Alec Baldwin,
30 RockJemaine Clement,
Flight of the ConchordsTony Shalhoub,
MonkJim Parsons,
The Big Bang TheorySteve Carell,
The OfficeCharlie Sheen,
Two and a Half MenMY PREDICTION: Alec Baldwin, 30 RockI'm rooting as hard as I possibly can for Jim Parsons, who in all fairness should've also been nominated and won last year. But I suspect
30 Rock is the 10-ton behemoth and it will take something very special (like being a beloved gay former child star a la Doogie) to knock 30 Rock out of the running for a Comedy Emmy.
LEAD ACTRESS:
Tina Fey,
30 RockChristina Applegate,
Samantha Who?Julia Louis-Dreyfus,
The New Adventures of Old ChristineSarah Silverman,
The Sarah Silverman ProgramToni Collette,
United States of TaraMary-Louise Parker,
WeedsMY PREDICTION: Tina Fey, 30 RockLast year Fey won three Emmys for writing, acting and producing. Then in 2009 she went on to win the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, Producers Guild, Wrtiers Guild and even People's Choice Awards for her work on
30 Rock. She also just won an Emmy last week for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her stint as Sarah Palin on
Saturday Night Live. I pity anyone who tries to get between Fey and the microphone on Emmy night.
SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Tracy Morgan,
30 RockJack McBrayer,
30 RockKevin Dillon,
EntourageNeil Patrick Harris,
How I Met Your MotherRainn Wilson,
The OfficeJon Cryer,
Two and a Half MenMY PREDICTION: Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your MotherHe's hosting the damn show, so not giving it to him would be an insult. Also, Barney Stinson is awesome.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Jane Krakowski,
30 RockKristin Chenoweth,
Pushing DaisiesAmy Poehler,
Saturday Night LiveKristen Wiig,
Saturday Night LiveVanessa Williams,
Ugly BettyElizabeth Perkins,
WeedsMY PREDICTION: Jane Krakowski, 30 RockThe
SNL ladies both deserve to win, but this season
30 Rock turned Jane Krakowski from the most superfluous character on TV into one of the funniest, especially with the fake Janis Joplin biopic storyline.
WRITING:
"Reunion,"
30 Rock"Apollo, Apollo,"
30 Rock "Mamma Mia,"
30 Rock"Kidney Now!,"
30 Rock"Prime Minister,"
Flight of the ConchordsMY PREDICTION: "Reunion," 30 RockThere are a lot of great
30 Rock episodes to choose from, but for my money, "I want to go to there" was the single funniest line of the season, and it came in this episode.
DIRECTING:
"Apollo, Apollo,"
30 Rock"Reunion,"
30 Rock"Generalisimo,"
30 Rock"Tree Trippers,"
Entourage"The Tough Brets,"
Flight of the Conchords"Stress Relief,"
The OfficeMY PREDICTION: "Tree Trippers," EntourageEven if you thought
Entourage has become unwatchable and Jeremy Piven is lame, this episode where the gang visits Joshua Tree while shrooming is pretty darn spectacular and beautifully crafted.
