Enchanted
The 2007 musical film Enchanted is perhaps Disney’s homage to the many animated features, most fairy tales, that it has done before—and a parody of itself.  The film eventually earned critical acclaim and was nominated for two Golden Globes and three Oscars.

The film centers of Giselle (Amy Adams), a quintessential Disney Princess who lives in the animated world of Andalasia, with talkative animal companions and musical interludes in each conversation.  She eventually falls in love with Prince Edward (James Marsden), and before they get married, she is thrown by his stepmother, Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon), through a magic portal to “a place where there are no happily ever afters” to keep her stepson single and remain queen.  Giselle then lands in New York City, where she meets divorce lawyer Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey), who takes her into his apartment despite thinking she’s crazy.  She starts acting like she used to, to Robert’s surprise, while hoping that Edward will show up.  The film also stars Timothy Spall, and Idina Menzel. Jeff Bennett and Kevin Lima provided the voices of Pip, Giselle’s chipmunk friend; Julie Andrews, the narration.

The film, directed by Kevin Lima and written by Bill Kelly, was Disney’s first live-action/traditional animation hybrid since 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit?  It was also the first Disney film with traditional animation—as a homage to films such as Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella and the like—after the company moved entirely to computer animation in 2004.  Alan Merken, who provided the scores for films such as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, composed the musical score.

Enchanted was released to theaters on November 21, 2007 and eventually earned $340,221,396 worldwide.  Critics also gave it positive reviews, applauding the film’s take on a classic Disney story, Amy Adams’ performance, as well as the way Disney pokes fun at itself.  Three of its songs were nominated for Best Original Song in the next year’s Academy Awards.  It also received two Golden Globe nominations, including one for Amy Adams, for Best Actress.
