katie holmesFollowing a series of movie projects, Katie Holmes returns to the small screen to guest star on ABC's Eli Stone this coming fall. This casting news marks her first TV work since the teen drama Dawson's Creek as Joey Potter, a role she portrayed five years ago.  It also marks her reunion with show co-creator and executive producer Greg Berlanti, whom she previously worked with on Dawson's Creek.

Eli Stone, for those who are not familiar, is a drama that stars Jonny Lee Miller as the title character.  Stone is discovered to have an inoperable brain aneurysm, which causes hallucinations that may actually be divinely inspired visions of the future.

Holmes, who is also known as the current wife of Tom Cruise, is slated to appear on Eli Stone's second episode of the season, which is expected to air on October 21.  She'll be portraying a lawyer who comes into contact with Eli.  She will also be part of a song and dance number when Eli Stone has one of his visions.

"It's not a one- or two-scene thing," Berlanti said of Holmes' appearance.  "She's in a significant portion of the episode."

"As we were talking about the beginning of the season ... we really wanted to bring eyeballs to the show," Berlanti said of conversations he had with ABC and fellow executive producer Marc Guggenheim.  "Marc and I were talking and he said, Could you go and ask Katie if she's interested? So I went and begged her, and she said yes."

Holmes most recently starred in the film Mad Money, opposite Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah. She also appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Thank You for Smoking, Wonder Boys and Ang Lee's The Ice Storm, as well as the blockbuster Batman Begins.  This fall, Holmes will make her Broadway debut in Arthur Miller's All My Sons, starring alongside John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, and Patrick Wilson.
