Wayne Brady, host of
Don't Forget the Lyrics, has appeared in kid-friendly projects as a mainstay on ABC Family, took his young daughter Maile Masako to the Emmy awards, and went to Kansas City last month to support a local charity for families in crisis, but the actor-comedian is hoping the public won't peg him as a family-oriented and wholesome guy.
“I think that it gets tough if there are people who want to slap that label on you that you have nothing to do with,” Brady told
The Kansas City Star during a phone interview. “I think that I'm
respected by families, but for the most part I've gotten the chance to do films where I'm the bad guy or TV appearances and guest spots.”
Brady, known also for his improvisational work on the television series,
Whose Line is it Anyway?, also said that he is far from being the face of family entertainment.
“I'm not the face of family entertainment… I'm an entertainer, and I'm an actor. So you perform your show for whoever your audience is at that point. When I was on
Whose Line, that's a family venue. When I was on daytime, that's a family venue,” he said, adding he has done more adult-centered projects, including his regular show in Las Vegas, and therefore, believes he is “a little more well-rounded than just being that.”
Funnily enough, Brady's current television gig can still be categorized under the "wholesome" department. FOX's
Don't Forget the Lyrics is a karaoke-style game wherein each contestant is prompted to complete song lyrics in different categories for increasing amounts of money. The show contains no violence, dirty words or sexually-explicit behavior, all three of which are prevalent in many other primetime programs today.
When asked which song category on
Don't Forget the Lyrics he would excel in the most, Wayne Brady told
The Kansas City Star that no such category exists, as he is “horrible” at the game.
“I listen to some of those songs and really think that I knew them, and I'm singing along in my head, and eight times out of 10, I'm so wrong,” he said.
