Flashback: Langton first meets Echo. Topher explains that after the procedure, Echo will always trust Langton, no matter what the circumstance. He explains that the handler must hold the active's hand and then repeat the script. It goes like clockwork. He says, “Everything's going to be alright” and she finishes, “Now that you're here.” “Do you trust me?” he asks. “With my life” she responds.
Back to the present: Echo's starting to go loopy. She sees the image of her former Caroline self in the woods just before she tumbles down and falls into the river.
Meanwhile, Langton has the ranger tied up. When he doesn't answer his questions, Langton shoots him in the leg. Twice. He explains that some guy hired him to stall the response team.
Echo's washed up on the beach and is having visions of a man standing over her with a bloody knife in the Dollhouse. Connell calls her back to consciousness via the walkie-talkie asking her if she wants a break. She takes off running. After a ways, she hears someone and backs behind a tree. As she turns around, she sees Langton. He repeats the protocol “Everything's going to be alright” just before he's shot in the side with an arrow.
Flashback: Langton brings Echo back from an engagement. She's raving about a heavy but “real” guy named Jason who she's just been on a date with. He's obviously uninterested and seems bored with his job.
Forest: Echo tries to move Langton but can't carry him far. She starts to recognize him but he just tells her they met a while back. Echo tells Langton about her visions and starts questioning her reality. He repeats the protocol and she doesn't respond. She says, “Everything's not going to be alright.” All of a sudden the script is flipped and she asks, “Do you trust me?” and he responds, “With my life.” He gives her a gun and she goes off to chase after Connell.
Now Echo's the one on the walkie-talkie taunting Robin Hood. She warns him she has a gun and that he should drop his bow and give up. Connell doesn't so she shoots a couple of shots in his direction, one of which hits his right arm. Caroline appears in front of her in a clearing and she stops. He enters the clearing and raises his bow. She turns around and raises her gun. They have a classic standoff. Both are weakened: she's poison and his bow arm is injured. He tells her he'll back off. Of course, as soon as they lower their weapons, he raises his to shot her. She gets the better shot. But then it goes into a hand-to-hand battle and she doesn't have a chance. It doesn't take long for him to get on top of her and start choking her. As she loses oxygen, Echo sees several visions of herself before she notices the arrow lying right next to her on the ground. She grabs it and stabs him in the neck.
While he's dying Connell says, “He was right about you. You really are special.” She has no idea who he's talking about. She leaves to find Langton and the recovery team comes in to pick them up. And she's wiped.
Dominic explains that Richard Connell doesn't exist. Everything in his file was fabricated. Adelle asked if they interrogated the man from the van and Dominic explains he was dead, but not from his encounter with Langton. Dr. Claire Saunders shows Langton the body and it's clear that the incisions are the same as the ones Alpha inflicted on Echo's previous handler. The doctor claims that it's impossible because they hunted down Alpha. Even if that's true (which we know it's not), Langton notes that it all comes back to Echo.
Echo runs into the Laurence Dominic in her blank doll state and he begins to taunt her. In a manner that can only be described as vicious, he tells her that everyone seems to end up dead around her. If it were up to him, he'd put her in the attic... or the ground. As he turns to leave, muttering about how “there's nobody in there,” she puts her hand on her left shoulder, a clear sign of “shoulder to the wheel.”
