While Dollhouse creator Josh Wheadon admits that the chances of Fox renewing the ratings-challenged series for a second season are "not very good," he is still hoping that his opus will not suffer a similar fate as cult favorite Firefly, which received the axe after only 11 episodes in 2002.
"I think they want it to succeed. I think they're getting it," he says. "They need it to succeed enough for them to pay for it. So I'm oddly hopeful but I'm also ready for anything."
Wheadon adds that while
Dollhouse's ratings may not be stellar, its intense cult following might just salvage it.
"The chances are existent. It's not done huge numbers, but with DVR, demographics, blad-dee-blah-dee-blah - all the boilerplate that's true about not living in a Neilsen world anymore is still true. Creatively the show found its footing rather dramatically the last few episodes, and the last ones we have coming up are fairly insane."
Among the upcoming episodes include an anomalous 13th one, which wasn't originally part of the package set to air on Fox. However, because the studio makes DVD deals based on the original number of 13, this episode was created as a standalone episode set after episode 12. FOX currently has no plans to pay for or air this episode.
"I'm still negotiating with the network and the studio to try to get them to air the thirteenth episode," Wheadon said.
"Creatively the show found its footing rather dramatically the last few episodes, and the last ones we have coming up are fairly insane," he added.
Wheadon said he assumed
was ending because the network was "not interested" in airing the 13th episode, but that changed when the network called him to deny such rumors.
