BBC confirmed Tuesday that pop star and breast cancer survivor Kylie Minogue will be appearing in an upcoming episode of the revived comedy series,
Doctor Who.
The episode, which serves as the show’s Christmas Special, will feature the 39-year-old singer-actress in a “major lead role,” opposite the tenth doctor, played by
David Tennant.
"It is an incredible thrill to be joining David and the entire
Doctor Who production for this year's Christmas special," Minogue said. "
Doctor Who enjoys a unique history and it is going to be very exciting to be a part of that."
Entitled “Voyage of the Damned,” the said Christmas special will commence filming in Cardiff, Wales this month. According to a spokesman for the show, executive producer and scriptwriter Russell T. Davies “is just putting the finishing touches to the episode.”
Stylist and best friend Will Baker was the one who urged Minogue to take the role in
Doctor Who, as he is an avid fan of the show.
"Yes...my gay husband (Baker) is so excited about it! But I'm not going to play a villain,” Minogue said.
Minogue first rose to fame when she starred in the Australian television soap opera,
Neighbours, playing the role of Charlene Robinson. While she and her co-stars were at a Fitzroy Football Club Benefit Concert, Minogue performed “The Loco-Motion,” after which she was given a recording contract by Mushroom Records. When the song was released as a single, it topped the Australian Music Charts for seven weeks. The success led Minogue to sign a deal with Stock, Aitken and Waterman, with whom she made several hit records, including her self-titled debut album and
Rhythm of Love. Her most recent work has made her one of the most successful dance-pop artist around the world.
Her acting career has also blossomed throughout her years in show business. Since appearing in
Neigbours, Minogue has worked in several film productions, including
Delinquents, Street Fighter, Hayride to Hell, Bio-Dome, Sample People, Misfit, Cut and Baz Luhrman’s
Moulin Rouge!.
