Third Season Inside Scoop Alert from 'Dexter' Producer
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

We already reported that Dexter’s very own Michael C. Hall revealed some juicy insights on what is to take place on the third and upcoming season of the Showtime series. In fact, we already found out that Jimmy Smits will be appearing to play Dexter’s first ever best buddy!  More recently, Dexter’s executive producer, Clyde Phillips spoke to Zap2It to reveal some of the nitty gritty details that will make this season of Dexter the most exciting yet.

The dynamics of the third season lies in Dexter’s relationship with his father, and Phillips reveals that “[Dexter’s father] Harry represents the subtext and alter ego of Dexter's conscious.  Dexter's not really having imaginary conversations with him, he's really having imaginary conversations with himself.”

Moreover, Phillips add that as Dexter is trying to move on from his father, the code evolves and thus Dexter takes a little bit of it with him.  More so, contrary to what most assumed about Dexter killing an innocent person, Phillips clarifies, “First of all, he doesn’t kill an innocent person.  He kills somebody that he hadn’t completely vetted.  And he kills this person in self-defense.”

As for the internal turmoil going on with Dexter, Phillips adds that the central character will be engaging in an evaluation of emotions, saying, “There’s a sense of wonder.  He doesn’t talk about his feelings, he wonders about them.  He says, so this must be what it feels like to be in love or to be betrayed or to trust somebody.  He’s always talking about emotions in the abstract, because he’s not really in touch yet.  He’s getting closer, but he’s not fully human in that regard.”

More importantly, Phillips points out that Smits’ character will play a role in these mind games that Dexter is playing with himself.  He reveals, “they end up forming a very deep bond of friendship. And Dexter’s never really had a friend before, so that becomes very important to him as he explores those 'emotions.'”

Catch Dexter as it returns to television screens on September 29 at 9pm on Showtime.
