Three days is all fans have to wait for the return of Showtime’s Dexter, which airs its highly anticipated third season on September 28 at 9pm on Showtime.  The series, which stars Michael C. Hall as the “serial killer with morals,” comes back with new recruit Jimmy Smits, who we previously reported will be playing Dexter’s first adult friend.  While some may find this as a development in the emotional aspect of Dexter, some still think that the dynamic of the show lies in the fact that we can never tell if he is truly striving to regain is emotional connection to the world or he’s just faking a front to fit into the crowd.

"I'm always reluctant to come down either way, because I think part of our show's appeal is that 'which is it?' ambiguity," Hall said in a recent conversation with Canada.com.  "Does he have feelings?  If so, are they deeply buried, or is he aware of them?"

"Figuring that out is part of the fun for the viewer, and for me, as an actor," Hall further admits.  "Whenever I'm asked that, I always say 'yes' to both. It's not a definitive answer, but it fits."

Moreover, Hall says that the voice overs in the show, which we pointed out in our last report is an integral part of how viewers can see directly through Dexter’s eyes, “makes us sort of complicit in what he does.  We're both watching him and seeing things from his perspective.  He's way outside the box, in terms of morality, but he does have this code that he adheres to.  That's admirable in its way, and I think it helps make him likable.”

This season, fans will get to see another side of Dexter now that he will finally be letting a newbie into his life.  Jimmy Smits’ Miguel Prado will be delving into the complex mindstrings of Dexter, while bringing in some complexities of his own.  In fact, Hall applauds Smits for taking on the role, which is equally as multifaceted as Dexter.

"It's a testament to our show's appeal to actors that someone of that calibre is willing to sign on to an open-ended, not-entirely-defined role that may or may not be there several weeks from now," Hall said.

As for the exciting events that the production has cooked up for us, executive producer gives us quite an ominous hint of what’s to come.

"I can't tell you precisely what happens but we consider it like dropping a pebble on a snow-filled mountainside that suddenly turns into an avalanche," Phillips said.  "Something is set in motion that can't be pulled back."

Showtime’s Dexter returns to television screens on September 28 at 9pm.
