Biography

Ricardo Antonio Chavira as Carlos Solis

Born on September 1, 1971 and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Ricardo Antonio Chavira attended the Robert E. Lee High School (now known as the Performing Arts School). Upon graduating, he pursued his tertiary education at the University of the Incarnate Word, and then earned his Master of Fine Arts in Acting from the UC San Diego's Professional Actor Training Program.

He relocated to Los Angeles shortly after completing his academics, and since then, has worked steadily in the film, television and theater industries. He began his movie career by working on several student films, three of which were directed by Hector Negrete, a UCLA film student at the time. The three films, I Ain't Mad at You, The Ex-Factor and Still Down, showcased Chavira's acting prowess in both comedy and drama. From there, he embarked on a series of independent movies, as well as on The Alamo by Touchstone Pictures.

As for his stage experience, Chavira has worked with a variety of well-known theaters in and out of Los Angeles, including the Odyssey Theater, La Jolla Playhouse, The Guthrie, the San Diego Rep, the Seattle Rep and the Missouri Rep. Among his theater projects are Tracers, Dogeaters, Bandido and Living Out.

Before he started appearing as Carlos Solis on the hit television drama/comedy series, Desperate Housewives, Chavira had worked on many different shows, including The Grubbs, Six Feet Under , The Division, Joan of Arcadia, Kingpin, 24 , JAG, NYPD Blue, Philly and City of Angels. He used his popularity from the show to further advocate the fight against breast cancer. Chavira has been involved in the cause since he was 15 years old, the time when his mother, Elizabeth Ries Chavira, lost her own battle with breast and ovarian cancer. Additionally, Chavira is the spokesperson (from San Antonio) for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and was a co-spokesperson for the Lee National Denim Day breast cancer fundraiser in 2005.
