As we reported last week,
Jesse Metcalfe, who played the recurring role of gardener John Rowland on
Desperate Housewives, checked himself into rehab in Los Angeles. His girlfriend, Nadine Coyle of Girls Aloud, says she is "glad he has realised he couldn't go on the way he was."
According to Coyle's father Niall, who made statements to the press on behalf of Nadine, she is in shock and "never saw this coming."
"We saw Jesse regularly when we were in the US, and we often thought he drank less than us," said Niall Coyle, suggesting that Metcalfe hid his alcohol problem from his loved ones.
Although he says Nadine is "devastated this has happened and blames herself that she didn't see the warning signs," she's standing by her man, said her father.
"They are staying together. She has been on the phone to Jesse for hours every day since he went into rehab to try and give him support. She will be there for him while he goes through the programme and will be there when he comes out."
Nadine herself said that if he had gone on drinking it would have spelled the end of their relationship. "It was hurting me to see him do that to himself. I'm going to be there for him and do all I can to help but at the end of the day, Jesse has to make the decision to stop on his own."
As well, his
Desperate Housewives co-star
Eva Longoria has offered her support, saying she was "really surprised."
"I worked with Metcalfe for a long time and he is the most put together young actor you'll ever meet," said Longoria. "He wants to be responsible and do the right thing. That's a brave thing and I support him 100 percent."
