is not all that different from the character she plays on ABC's Desperate Housewives
. While the 52-year-old actress may not be as secretive and devious as her onscreen persona, she does know a thing or two about being involved with a younger man.
"I've been dating younger men since my 20s," Delany, whose Desperate Housewives
character, Katherine Mayfair, has a younger husband, told More
magazine. "When I was 29, I dated someone 21… younger men are just more fun. I like their energy. I've always been kind of young for my age."
Despite having entered the dating scene at a young age, Delany, has never been married. However, she admitted that she now feels ready to settle down.
"Marriage has never been a big deal for me," she told More
. "But I think I'm ready now. Before, I wanted adventures. I feel like, in some ways, I was smarter than anybody. I got to have all the fun in the world, to experience a lot of people and figure out what I really like. I got to evolve. Now I know what makes me happy."
She also joked that one of the reasons why she decided to sign up for Desperate Housewives
is because several of its actresses – Eva Longoria
, Marcia Cross
and Nicollette Sheridan
– have gotten married and engaged since joining the show.
Although Delany is one of the new faces on Wisteria Lane, Cherry first approached the actress about the show in 2004, when they were still in the process of casting the female leads. She auditioned for the role of Bree, and wowed Cherry with her performance.
"Dana did a very intelligent, sly reading,” Cherry recalled. “She said she was doing her mother."
Despite her winning audition, Dana Delany turned the part down, and it eventually went to Cross. Delaney said that it felt too similar to her previous project, Pasadena
, and was not willing at the time to join another series.
turned out to be a huge success for ABC, so when Cherry offered Delany a different role this past spring, she jumped at the chance.
"It's so rare you get second chances in life,” she told More
. “Marc said, 'Do you want to hear about the character?' And I said, 'Sure, but it's yes, no matter what.' "
More importantly, she said that she “wanted to be on a hit. I never have been. China Beach
was a critical hit but never really got the numbers."
Now that Delany is
part of the hit show, she's as busy as ever, and she said she wouldn't expect any less from the person she eventually ends up with.
"I like people who are still actively creating in their life, who aren't set," she said. "I don't feel like I'm set. And I don't have any baggage, for better or worse. I don't have any plants or pets or kids. I can lock the door and go. I need to be with somebody for whom that's okay."
