Design Star is a reality competition on HGTV that premiered on July 23, 2006. Hosted by Clive Pearse, the show features contestants vying for the opportunity to star in their own design show on the cable network. Each week, they are subjected to different interior design challenges, and whoever fails to impress the panel of judges at the end of the task is sent home. As with any reality series, elimination is carried out with a signature catchphrase, and considering the prize at stake for this competition, the contestants who do poorly are ushered out with the statement, “Your show has been cancelled.”
Design Star's panel of judges includes renowned interior designer Vern Yip, fashion designer Cynthia Rowley and In Style executive editor Martha McCully.
The first season of the reality series featured 10 aspiring designers: David Bromstad from Miami, Florida, Vanessa De Leon from Fairfield, New Jersey, Tym de Santo from Fort Wayne, Indiana, twin brothers Teman and Teran Evans from Brooklyn, New York, Alice Fakier from Temple, Texas, Ramona Jan from Damascus, Pennsylvania, Joseph Kennard from Boston, Massachusetts, Temple McDowell from Farmington, Utah and Donna Moss from Arlington, Texas.
After weeks of intense challenges, which included designing a New York City apartment using only one color that is assigned to them, Bromstad was proclaimed the first winner of Design Star and consequently became the host of HGTV's Color Splash, which premiered on March 17.
The second season of Design Star premiered on July 22 with a casting special, wherein the identities of the new and bigger group of contestants were revealed: Scott Corridan, Todd David, Josh Foss, Josh Johnson, Neeraja Lockhart, Robb Mariani, Lisa Millard, Kim Myles, Adrian Nussbaumer, Christina Ray and Will Smith. This time around, the competition has been set in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Design Star airs every Sunday night at 9pm ET/PT on HGTV.
