John Hawkes was famously known for his role on HBO's
Deadwood. He played Sol Star, the life-long best friend of Seth Bullock (
Timothy Olyphant) and partner in the hardware business. Generally, his character was composed and sensible but highly capable of standing up for himself whenever provoked. As the only Jew in the camp, he was often mocked by Al Swearengen (
Ian McShane) but refused to be affected by his ridicule. Aside from his business acumen, he was also noted for his infatuation with Trixie, Al Swearengen's favorite whore. In the coming months, the he will be featured in a series of movies, ranging from drama, crime and comedy.
Deadwood has positively launched Hawkes' acting career as it opened doors of opportunities for the 47-year old actor. Shortly after the western drama, he has acquired a string of movie offers, which kept him busy until now.
Marking his onscreen return is the film
American Gangster, a crime-drama story about a drug lord who smuggles heroin into Harlem during the 1970s by hiding the stash inside the coffins of American soldiers returning from Vietnam. The movie is scheduled for release on November 2 and stars Hawkes opposite Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and Cuba Gooding Jr.
In 2008, he'll be kicking off the year with the comedy
East Bound and Down, which is set to air as an HBO pilot. The show includes Jennifer Irwin, Danny R. McBride and Andrew Daly.
After his slapstick feature, he'll be tapping on several drama movies,
The Pardon, which is based on the true story of Toni Jo Henry, and
Small Town Saturday Night, which explores the rise and fall of a small town as it reaches a boiling point on a Saturday night. Both of which are currently in production and are slated to hit the theaters also next year.
