It's the finale of Dancing with the Stars this week, and Tuesday night the Mirror Ball Trophy will be given to one of the three remaining couples.

Will it be Mya and Dmitry Chaplin, whose scores have put them at the top of the leader board five out of the nine weeks, and who have the commanding overall lead with the judges?

Will it be Kelly Osbourne and Louis van Amstel, the emotional story of the unlikely underdog who overcame the odds to become a fan favorite, despite never earning a 10 from the judges?

Or will it be Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson, the show biz legend who hit his stride in the middle of the competition, but who has landed at the bottom of the leader board for the past two weeks?

It seems clear to me that if this were based solely on merit, Mya and Dmitry would already be declared the winners, but that's not always the case.  In four of the nine seasons on Dancing with the Stars, the couple with the highest overall scoring average did not win.

Last year, Gilles Marini scored better than Shawn Johnson, but still lost.  Other instances where the scoring leader didn't win include Mel B. in season 5, Mario Lopez in season 3 and John O'Hurley in season 1.
