Actor Steve Guttenberg was born August 24, 1958 in Brooklyn, New York but his family eventually moved to North Massapequa, New York, where he was raised. In 1976, he graduated from Plainedge High School. He also attended The Julliard School, State University of New York and the University of California, Los Angeles. He took classes under famous theatre performer, director and writer Herbert Berghof. Guttenberg became member of the well-known improvisational comedy group The Groundlings. He partook in several theater productions including Prelude to a Kiss, The Boys Next Door and Furthest From the Sun.
He has appeared on numerous TV shows, most recently
Veronica Mars , where he played Mayor Woody Goodman. Guttenberg was very popular in the 1980s, and was most famous for his role as Carey Mahoney in the Police Academy franchise. He also starred in the sci-fi movies Cocoon and Short Circuit. In 1987, he starred in the comedy film Three Men and a Baby with Tom Selleck and Ted Danson.
Guttenberg also appeared in a Coca-Cola advertisement in 1980. In 2002, he directed, produced, co-wrote and starred on the film adaptation of the Broadway hit P.S. Your Cat is Dead. He was also executive producer of the Emmy-award winning show CBS Schoolbreak Special, a program that focused on issues affecting high school students.
Guttenberg is dedicated to helping the homeless and to improving opportunities for young people. He created Guttenhouse, an apartment complex that accommodates those who are past their foster child status. He was chosen Ambassador for Children's Issues by the Entertainment Industry Foundation. When Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. in 2005, Guttenberg spent a week volunteering at the Houston Astrodome.
