Dancing with the Stars season 8 is finally over! A new winner was crowned in the form of 17-year-old Shawn Johnson, leaving Gilles Marini and Melissa Rycroft in second and third place respectively. While the French actor and The Bachelor star are both happy for Shawn's triumph, they're also both disappointed, understandably. After all, it wasn't an easy ride. They all had to go through 11 weeks of painstaking dance rehearsals and tried to avoid weekly eliminations by impressing not only the judges but audiences as well.
"I wanted that mirrorball trophy, I really did," Melissa told Usmagazine.com of how badly she wanted to win Dancing with the Stars
. "But I don't need it because I know I've accomplished more than I ever thought I could."
"That's what was cool, nobody knew [who would win]," she added. "Backstage, we were all really happy for each other. We started reminiscing about our journeys and how far each of us have come and the last time we were all out here, we all got perfect scores. Personally, we all won!"
On the other hand, Gilles, whom many believe should have won, is more frustrated for letting his son down than actually losing the dance competition.
"My son looked at me and started crying because he wanted me to get that trophy," Gilles said. "He was just crying and crying and crying. I feel so badly because I want to be with him but now I am flying to New York. I feel like a bad daddy because I can't see him and hold him."
In spite of everything, Gilles says he's happy for Shawn Johnson.
"It's great for her to have it," he explained. "Come on, she's only 17 years old. I don't want to be the one crushing her dream."
A new season of Dancing with the Stars
is slated for the fall.
