"It's really gotten ugly between the two of them since the spit."
Thus said an insider allegedly privy to the unpleasant affair between Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy to Pop Eater. The divorce between
Dancing with the Stars' two most controversial pros has allegedly crept its way to the dance floor last season, where Karina and partner Aaron Carter finished fifth while Maks and Debi Mazar ended up 12th.
But wait, there's more:
ABC: Both
Maks and Karina Returning to 'Dancing with the Stars'
"I've got to thank her for being a great instructor in the lesson of what not to look for in a woman," the big guy allegedly said in reference to his former fiancé. The two broke off their engagement in September, with neither camp giving an explanation for the split.
The same insider, who claims to be close to Maks, said his friend doesn't talk to Karina anymore. The two are supposed to be on Broadway's
Burn the Floor together, and Karina's absence on the show is adding weight to the rumors.
"Maksim wouldn't have returned to the show if the producers had insisted on him dancing with Karina," said a theatre insider. "The same will be true for the new season of
Dancing with the Stars. All the feathers and sequins in the world wouldn't be able to cover the bad feeling between those two."
Maks isn't the first guy whom Karina dated "at work" - in 2006, she dated her season 3 partner Mario Lopez for a couple of years. She and Maks began dating in the summer of 2008 and announced their engagement a mere six months later in December.
News of ugly backstage drama first surfaced during last October's Emmys, despite claims from Karina that the two are still in good terms. Maks didn't mince words to Life and Style when he said then that he didn't want to stay friends with Karina, adding, "She's a lot better at hiding her feelings apparently than I am. I just need to drop the sad person act and move on."
