'Dancing with the Stars' Fantasy Cast: The Movie Stars

Ralph Macchio as The Karate KidEvery season of Dancing with the Stars has some mix of athletes, actors and actresses, singers, entertainers and models. Yesterday, I brought you the three athletes who I would like to see in fantasy cast, and today, I will continue to fill out the cast with my choices for movie actors.

As I sat down to think of which movie stars would make the best candidates for the show, I realized that it's really hard to think of semi-famous D-listers who haven't appeared in a movie in ages. Obviously, big stars can't be bothered with something like Dancing with the Stars, so you've gotta scrape the bottom of the barrel here.

Movie stars traditionally don't tend to fare well on Dancing with the Stars. Last season, Steve Guttenberg flopped, getting voted off in the third week. Shannon Elizabeth did better and actually became rather skilled, but even she got no further than sixth place. No movie actor or actress ever broke out of the middle of the pack in any of the previous seasons as well, so I'm not expecting too much out of the three that I have on my list. Here are my picks for formerly famous movie stars whose careers might benefit from exposure on Dancing with the Stars.

Ralph Macchio

Ralph MacchioI may be dating myself here, but I remember when Ralph Macchio was hot stuff. The way he waxed on and waxed off in The Karate Kid, the way he stayed in the fight and ultimately gained the respect of Johnny Lawrence, the star of the Cobra Kai dojo? Just thinking of Macchio's climactic crane kick still gives me a thrill in my heart that I am slightly ashamed of. Apparently, Macchio has appeared as a guest star on Entourage three years ago playing himself, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have any problem clearing his schedule to learn how to dance.

Linda Hamilton

Linda HamiltonThe Terminator franchise is back on our radars again with the second season of The Sarah Connor Chronicles premiering over on FOX shortly. However, we must all remember that it is Linda Hamilton, not Lena Headey, who is the real Sarah Connor.

In many ways, Hamilton was my inspiration for getting into sports. She was no damsel in distress in T2 and could do pull-ups just as well as any man out there. But in real life, she was struggling with bipolar disorder, which she went public with in 2004. It would be tremendously inspirational for her to be on Dancing with the Stars to show the public how she has been able to overcome her condition and how it doesn't hold her back. It would be just like Marlee Matlin from season 6 who proved that you don't have to be able to hear to be a good dancer.

Ally Sheedy

Ally SheedyIt was essential for me to include a member of the Brat Pack in my fantasy cast, but the question was, which Brat hasn't been in anything for a while? Answer: Ally Sheedy.

Sheedy's basketcase character was my favorite in the classic Brat Pack movie The Breakfast Club. And her portrayal of Leslie Hunter, the character in St. Elmo's Fire who was afraid of losing her sense of self in her relationship with Alec (Judd Nelson), almost perfectly describes the discomforts I have experienced in my own post-graduate life. The only problem I see with Sheedy's inclusion in Dancing with the Stars is that she danced ballet fairly seriously as a child. But that was a very long time ago, and I hardly think it would give her more of an advantage than dancing in music videos gave Mario, Mel B or Sabrina Bryan.

The real cast of Dancing with the Stars season 7 will be revealed when the official announcement is made on the morning of Monday, August 25 on Good Morning America. The three-night season premiere event will take place on Monday, September 22 on 8pm.
