It wasn't supposed to happen this way. After narrowly missing out on winning Dancing with the Stars in his original season, Gilles Marini was supposed to return triumphant to the ballroom. Instead, he landed in sixth place after his elimination in week 8 of Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars.

So why did that happen?

Not all titles featured on BuddyTV are available through Amazon Prime.

Complacency

Until the past two weeks, Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd topped the overall leader board. They were untouchable, even if voters didn't spend too much time thinking about them.

Did that create a situation in which fans just forgot to vote for the pair when it was needed? If people just assumed that Gilles and Peta were safe, they might not vote. That never ends well.

The Marathon

Gilles and Peta were eliminated second in the dance marathon last week. That left the couple with only a few extra points and dropped them down in the standings like crazy. More importantly, the marathon failure may have indicated to some viewers that Gilles' DWTS run was just about over. I mean, if he couldn't keep up in a marathon, how could he make it to the finals?

Monster Fan Bases... That Are Not His

Gilles and Peta had consistently higher scores than at least two of their competitors over the past two weeks. The celebrities? Kelly Monaco and Emmitt Smith. So why are these two stars around after Gilles had to say goodbye?

The most likely answer is the fans. Kelly is known for having a lot of devoted fans, thanks to her soap-opera work. Similarly, everyone knows the name Emmitt Smith, and football players do seem to come into Dancing with the Stars with a pre-set fan base.

Gilles didn't have that.

Slowly Dropping Scores

Gilles and Peta haven't been the best in awhile. Their scores have steadily dropped, relative to the competition, for the past couple of weeks. There is no way they would have made it to the finals if the trend had kept up.

The French Connection

I suppose this is controversial, but I can't help thinking that Gilles was slightly handicapped by the fact that he was the only obviously foreign celebrity during the uber-patriotic Salute-the-Troops week. Add in the fact that he's a French foreigner? The guy was doomed.

Whatever the case, I will still choose to believe that Gilles Marini was unjustly eliminated from Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars. What do you think?
