While
Dancing With the Stars fans wait patiently for the August 29 announcement of this year's 12 celebrity contestants, one brand new name has leaked out via the scoop sleuths at Entertainment Weekly. Filling the ‘mature male underdog' slot will be none other than Mr. Las Vegas himself, Wayne Newton. Now, there are two ways to look at this:
Dancing with the Stars has either hit the height of absurdity, or the pinnacle of aptness. Newton is at once the embodiment of surgical and hair dye age resistance, and again the epitome of a tireless showman.
Newton may have grown into one of those mysterious personalities that somehow invert into an effigy of themselves, but no matter how much the face work and bad hair jobs stare out at you, you cannot resist the feeling of awe at this guy's absolute tenacity. David Lee Roth wouldn't have lasted half as long on the strip, and probably would have never made a tawdry
National Lampoon cameo either.
Wayne Newton's addition to the confirmed list brings that total to a mere five, and ABC has only given us a few shady silhouettes to work with on the remaining seven competitors. If you follow the formula you know there will probably be a boxer, a soap star, a 90210 star, a boy band singer or relative, an aged teen idol who slipped into obscurity, a singer, model, and probably a beauty pageant winner of some sort.
Last season's winner
Apolo Anton Ohno and judge Carrie Ann Inaba will get together on
Good Morning America on August 29 to reveal the final 12. Some good rumors suggest boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., and singer Aaron Carter were approached, but no confirmation from either. According to the recruitment policies, a contestant loses their chance to compete if they attempt to publicize in any way shape or form.
