Dancing with the Stars continues to bring us twist after twist this season. Last week, we had out first group competition, which pitted Team Cha Cha against Team Paso Doble. (In case you missed it, Team Paso trounced the Cha Chas in a very big way.) This week, with just two weeks until the season finale, the couples were all given two different styles to learn and to perform, one traditional ballroom and one Latin, but the catch this time was that each celebrity had to do a solo of at least 15 seconds during the Latin dance, without his or her professional partner there to prop them up.
Brooke Burke has been dominating the competition so far, but I think the challenge of learning and then performing so much material really gave some of her competitors a chance to edge her out. She still came out at the top of the leaderboard last night, but Warren Sapp came in and took the number 2 spot. Read on to see how I personally ranked the 10 performances last night.
1. Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson - Jive
Scores: 9+8+9=26. Warren wowed us all last ngiht. He has so much girth that it's sometimes hard to remember how fluid he is and how easily he can move. I love Warren so much because he also has such a great attitude about learning his routines. Kym perfectly choreographed this jive for him, and yes, although he was a big flat-footed, he was tremendously entertaining and very skilled throughout.
2. Brooke Burke and Derek Hough - Mambo
Scores: 9+9+9=27. Brooke's solo in this mambo was by far the best celebrity solo of the whole evening. She can really work her hips. I thought that Brooke and Derek's mambo really captured the spirit of a perfect mambo. The only reason why it wasn't number one in my rankings, however, is that I felt that Brooke's technique and posture was a little bit sloppy. Otherwise, it was a job well done.
3. Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson - Tango
Scores: 10+9+9=28. Here he is again, ladies and gentleman. Warren Sapp proved out versatile he is by doing a tremendous tango. He stayed in character, with great intensity and great footwork. This guy really works hard, but he knows a thing or two about how to give a good performance. You can tell, even if you're watching on TV from home, how much he engages with the audience. He's got my vote.
4. Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer - Foxtrot
Scores: 9+8+9=26. Lance and Lacey kept it by the books this week, with no barefoot gimmicks and no hip hop or rock and roll in their choreography. But that doesn't mean they were boring. Their classic foxtrot had plenty of sweet quirkiness still, and what's more, it had Len Goodman's stamp of approval.
5. Brooke Burke and Derek Hough - Tango
Scores: 10+8+10=28. To be perfectly honest, I didn't love Brooke's tango last night. I don't know what Carrie Ann and Bruno were smoking, but I don't think she deserved a perfect score on this at all. Len Goodman has my back, though, and he pointed out a whole string of mistkaes that Brooke made. All technicalities aside, I thought that their tango was well danced, but it just wasn't intense enough. It didn't make me stand up and cheer like Brooke's other performances have done.
6. Cody Linley and Edyta Sliwinska - Foxtrot
Scores: 8+8+8=24. Week after week, Cody has been giving us good, respectable performances, but he has the problem in which he starts out too stiff. He relaxes half-way through his routines and then he starts doing well, but he just has to get past that beginning. Maybe it's nerves. I don't know. But whatever it is, it affected his foxtrot last night. Still though, it wasn't terrible, and a 24 out of 30 is nothing to sneeze at.
7. Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer - Samba
Scores: 8+7+9=24. This samba really had the judges split. I'm not sure that it really deserved a 9, but you know that Bruno. He can be crazy. Lance and Lacey definitely worked hard this week, and it showed in their performance. I just don't think that Lance had quite enough time to feel comfortable with his choreography, and it showed on his face during the performance, especially during his solo.
8. Maurice Greene and Cheryl Burke - Quickstep
Scores: 8+8+8=24. If I were a betting woman, I'd say that it'll be Maurice who gets the boot tonight on the
Dancing with the Stars results show. He danced a perfectly fine, if a little bit boring, quickstep last night, but really, at this stage of the competition, every routine should wow us. He did improve his posture and his fast steps were nicely done, but I think he's worn out his welcome on the show.
9. Maurice and Cheryl - Paso doble
Scores: 8+8+8=24. Maurice and Cheryl were on Team Paso Doble last week, so that experience should have given Maurice an advantage for this week's performance. Unfortunately, he didn't do as well last night in his individual performance. All the effort and strength he was putting into his turns and his cape work were completely visible to the audience. He should have been more controlled and elegantly strong.
10. Cody Linley and Edyta Sliwinska - Mambo
Scores: 8+8+8=24. Cody is adorable, but I think he needs some more hours in the rehearsal studio for him to achieve a believable mambo. He brought the high energy and enthusiasm to this dance that he does to all his other dances, but he was just too jumpy, jerky and awkward. His solo was almost cring-worthy due to his dorkiness. However, if he gets through until next week,
Julianne Hough will be back to dance with him, so that just might be his saving grace.
