Dancing with the Stars 5: Top 5 Fashion Review
Dancing with the Stars 5: Top 5 Fashion Review
Dancing with the Stars is hotter than ever, and on last night's performance show, I thought that all of the five remaining celebrity couples did excellent jobs on both rounds of ballroom dancing. I also thought that last night's performances all scored above-average marks on the fashion side of things. Everyone was dressed either in sleek, elegant attire or in appropriately wacky and fun costumes, which makes it very difficult for me to decide which was the best-dressed on last night's Dancing with the Stars, but I shall try my hardest. Let the Dancing with the Stars fashion show begin!

5. Melanie Brown and Maksim Chmerkovskiy

There's no question that Mel B is a fantastic performer, but why must she continue with the palazzo pants? I was definitely digging the lace-up leather corset top that she wore for her tango, but the flowy, sheer pants are too soft to go with the dominatrix look. Their outfits for the mambo were fine—Maks is always welcome to bare his chest—but they didn't coordinate well with each other. They may have danced in perfect synchronicity, but as far as their clothes were concerned, they could have been in two different countries.

4. Cameron Mathison and Edyta Sliwinska

Cameron and Edyta are usually one of my favorites, costume-wise, and their wardrobe choices were very good last night. But, much like their dance technique, at this stage of the competition, good isn't going to cut it. I liked Cameron's light blue-grey tux with tails that he donned for his Harry Potter-themed Viennese waltz (and I absolutely loved their choice of music as well), but he could have stepped up his wardrobe for the cha cha. For the cha cha, Edyta's teal blue bra and pants combo was daring and bold as usual, but all Cameron wore were khaki pants and a vest. Not very visually interesting, if you ask me.

3. Marie Osmond and Jonathan Roberts

I was only mildly impressed with Marie and Jonathan's cowboy-inspired costumes for the jive last night, but I absolutely fell in love with the asymmetrical black dress she wore for her rhumba. The dress was perfectly flattering and made her look much slimmer. And, the asymmetry and the sequins detailing provided enough variety to prevent her look from being too boring and monochromatic. In fact, I totally need to get a dress like that.

2. Jennie Garth and Derek Hough

I loved Jennie's bright green, sequinsy dress that she wore for her jive with Derek. It's exactly the kind of dress that would be completely trashy as soon as you step off of a ballroom dance stage, but is laudable on the stage. On the other hand, Jennie and Derek's foxtrot look was all class. Jennie was pure old Hollywood glamour, from her sparkly, champagne-colored gown to the curls of her side-swept hair. It didn't hurt that Derek was classically dressed in a perfectly coordinating tux with tails.

1. Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough

I said this before, and I'll say it again. I love capes! For their paso doble, Helio and Julianne each had a cape. Also, the gold filigree detailing on Helio's pants and jacket matched the mood of the furious furling and unfurling of their capes. Their quickstep was excellent, not only for their top-notch technique that earned them a perfect 30 out of 30, but also for their fun '40s-inspired ensembles. Helio combined an entirely yellow suit with two-toned saddle shoes and a jaunty yellow hat, making him look like he just stepped off of the set of Guys and Dolls.
