I recently went on a hike with a friend and his coworker, Casey, whom I had just met that day. We were sick of all the Seattle rain, so we decided to drive out to Eastern Washington where we heard tell of this wondrous thing called sunshine. It was well worth it, and along the way, I learned much insight into the ABC network's demographic.
During the long car ride and on the hike, our conversations often veered into my current area of expertise: television. While my friend hardly watches any TV (except, inexplicably, for
Two and a Half Men—shudder!), Casey's tastes seemed to match my own much better:
Dancing with the Stars,
Grey's Anatomy and
Private Practice were the only network shows that Casey likes to watch. This would make sense, seeing as ABC aggressively goes after the female demographic by filling its schedule to the gills with "chick" shows, except that Casey is a married man in his early 40s with two kids.

Ha, this is hilarious. I find it kind of confusing that dads watch these shows. Maybe they started watching...
What's even funnier is that the only other TV that Casey likes to watch is the Military channel. He's a war buff.
Apparently, though, Casey is not alone in his enthusiasm for ballroom dancing and hot doctors making out. TVSquad reported that TiVo, in celebration of Father's Day this Sunday, conducted a poll to find out which shows dads secretly love to watch.
The results are in, and here are dads' top five guilty pleasures:
1.
Dancing with the Stars
2.
Grey's Anatomy
3.
Desperate Housewives
4.
Access Hollywood
5.
TMZ
If these results are to be taken as truth (and I'm not sure how the poll was conducted, so these results may be entirely bogus), then apparently, dads love them some glittery outfits, sudsy storylines and trashy celebrity gossip too!
Frankly, I'm mystified that
Access Hollywood and
TMZ made the list. I didn't think that anyone actually watched these shows.
Embrace it, dads! Come out of the closet about your love of mambos and
Julianne Hough. Maybe you all don't enjoy
Justin Chambers in a black wifebeater in quite the same way that I do, but admit that you cheered for Meredith (
Ellen Pompeo) when she constructed that floorplan of candles as a symbol of trying again with McDreamy (
Patrick Dempsey) in the season finale of
Grey's Anatomy. I promise, it won't make you any less of a man.
Which of these shows do you like best?
