Damages returns for its sophomore season tonight, 15 months since we last enjoyed the dark legal drama.  This season, it's all about characters seeking revenge or repentance.  After her exceptional victory over billionaire Arthur Frobisher, Patty Hewes is back and this time, the legal world is at her feet.

The season opener called “I lied, too,” which acts as both a flashback and plate-setter as to where the story goes from here, sees Patty taking a break from the law and focusing her attention to her new charitable foundation.  But her world crumbles down as she receives a call from Daniel Purcell, a man from her mysterious past, and finds herself entangled in a new legal challenge with personal and professional repercussions, the likes of which she could never have imagined.  And what starts as a domestic murder case, escalates into the highest reaches of government as Patty unearths a vast conspiracy.

Meanwhile, Frobisher is recovering from gunshot wounds at an undisclosed clinic.  This season, fans can expect a weepy and vulnerable Frobisher, which is quite a departure from the defiant self-made multi-billionaire who previously had vowed to defeat his enemies.

As for Ellen, she's determined to do whatever it takes to take down Patty.  She's agreed to act as an informant for the FBI, assisting them in their criminal investigation of Patty and the firm.

Damages isn't the type of show that shows its cards early on so it's difficult to make definitive assumptions after only the first episode. But given its history of earning the most Golden Globe Award nominations of any show on television (Glenn Close won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Series Drama, while the show received a nomination for Best TV Series Drama and supporting stars Ted Danson and Rose Byrne were nominees), its hard not to expect a mind-blowing second season.
