Last week, FX announced that Academy Award-winner William Hurt (
Kiss of the Spider-Woman) will join the cast of
Damages for its upcoming second season. This week, another actor has been recruited to add even more zest to the legal drama.
Timothy Olyphant, perhaps best known for playing sheriff Seth Bullock on HBO’s
Deadwood, has signed on for a season-long arc on
Damages, playing a guy who enters Ellen’s (Rose Byrne) life and becomes entangled in both her personal life as she deals with her recent loss and professional struggles with boss, Patty Hewes (Glenn Close).
Following his stint on
Deadwood, Olyphant starred in the romantic comedy
Catch and Release, alongside
Alias’ Jennifer Garner. He was then cast in the movie
Live Free or Die Hard as the villain Thomas Gabriel. Last year, he played the lead role of Agent 47 in the crime thriller
Hitman, which is based from the video game about a gun-for-hire man ensnared in a political conspiracy. Most recently, he returned to the TV circuit as he made a guest appearance on
Samantha Who? as Winston Funk.
"We've been huge fans of Tim's all the way back to his New York theater days," show creators Todd and Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman said in the press release. "His magnetic combination of humor, charm and menace make him a perfect fit for our show. We're thrilled to get the chance to write for him."
Filming for new episodes of
Damages started this week in New York and is scheduled to premiere early next year, likely after
The Shield's seventh and final season has concluded.
Damages received the most Golden Globe nominations of any series on television and Glenn Close earned the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – TV Series Drama. It also recently received three 2008 Television Critics Association Awards nominations.
