'CSI' Influences Legislative Debate at Malaysia

CSIIt's true. CSI has become such a worldwide phenomenon that lawmakers from halfway across the world have made multiple references to the show while debating on an important piece of legislation.  The global hit series CSI was mentioned several times during a debate on the DNA Identification Bill of 2008 in the Malaysian parliament.

Firstly, it was referred to several times with regards to how fast and efficiently investigations are conducted.  There were points raised, however, as to whether or not it is correct to compare real-life cases and those spearheaded by Gil Grissom, played by William Petersen (and Laurence Fishburne in the future).

“In it they just solve one or two cases a week but in real life, the police have to deal with hundreds of cases," one member said.  Another point of reference made on CSI is about how its database of collected DNA is kept under an independent party control, off limits from the police and other authorities.

This was to ensure evidence pertaining to DNA cannot be manipulated to serve the interest of any vested party, he added.

Meanwhile, still somehow fresh from the news of being cast on the show, Fishburne will have to make a public appearance with Gil Grissom, his would-be predecessor.  Even before the Matrix actor takes on his big shoes on CSI, he and Petersen will be presenting together at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 21, Sunday, at 8pm.

There were some rumors circulating the set of CSI as Fishburne himself revealed that prior to his being cast, he hasn't seen a single episode of the procedural, something unforgivable for fans who are sad enough that Grissom is leaving.

“To be perfectly frank, I said to Naren (Shankar) and Carol (Mendelsohn) when we met here in New York that I felt a little stupid and embarrassed that I hadn't watched the show prior to having a meeting with them.  But I'm happy to say that the episodes they sent me to look at were really engaging and really wonderful and kind of dark and moody, like a lot of the work I've actually been involved in."
