It seems like the end is near for Criminal Minds, which just lost yet another series regular. Following the exit of Shemar Moore, Thomas Gibson was fired from the CBS procedural drama, understandably leaving many fans devastated. And now the question remains: Will Criminal Minds survive?

It really is hard to imagine Criminal Minds without Hotch or Morgan. After all, Hotch is the BAU Unit Chief and the glue that holds the group together. His absence will create a huge void that no one can fill. As for Morgan, fans have already somehow made peace with his departure several episodes before season 11 came to an end — when the beloved Supervisory Special Agent chose to say goodbye to his life at the BAU to be with his family. But that’s not to say that he won’t be greatly missed. Despite the cast shake-up, Criminal Minds will most likely survive, for the following reasons.
Solid Fans = Solid Ratings
While there are many fans who have impulsively declared that they will no longer be watching Criminal Minds next season, there are still plenty of loyal viewers who will be tuning in to see how Hotch will be written out and who will most likely stick around for the rest of the season.
The ratings may tremble a bit initially but history proves Criminal Minds is a solid ratings performer that can withstand cast shake-ups. Over the course of the show’s 11 seasons, the CBS series has lost Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin), Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (A.J. Cook) and recently Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore), but the numbers remained consistent.
The Disturbing Cases
If you’re a fan of Criminal Minds, you’re probably fascinated with serial killers and grisly murders — which is probably the show’s biggest lure aside from its cast. Not only does the show make you think like a criminal, each episode leaves you with thought-provoking questions. The writing is solid and the cases are believable since most of them are based on actual crimes.
The Rest of the Cast
Even without Gibson and Moore, Criminal Minds still has a talented cast, including Matthew Gray Gubler, Kirsten Vangsness and Joe Mantegna. The show has also promoted Aisha Tyler, who plays Dr. Tara Lewis, to series regular, while Paget Brewster is reprising her character Emily Prentiss for “a whole bunch of episodes.” Hopefully, the addition of CSI: Miami star Adam Rodriguez as a series regular will also help fill the big void.
