This week, although American Idol has yet to announce it officially, the theme may be "Songs From This Decade." So apparently the contestants have a whole two and a half years to choose from, seeing as we've barely started this decade. This is a good test, because it will indicate to the judges what type of contemporary artist each contestant might be, and it will test their modern relevancy. This will be a good week for Colton Dixon, and probably Jessica Sanchez. It will be an OK week for Skylar Laine, Hollie Cavanagh, and Phillip Philips, although Phillip would really shine in a '90s week. I'm a little concerned for Joshua Ledet, who might not have a lot of soul music to choose from, and Elise Testone, who has more of a classic rock/Janis Joplin feel. I mean, will the contestants be allowed to use autotune?
Here are my song choices for each contestant in the Top 7 this week. I hope next week is "Songs From the Movies" so I can hear that song from Once again and again. Do you think this week they'll have Skylar sing "Need You Now" as a duet with someone? Also, this week marks the likely return of a glut of Adele songs. While we're making requests, I think the group number should be "We Are Young," by Fun. But it will probably be the Ford Music Video, won't it?
Colton Dixon - "Whataya Want from Me" by Adam Lambert
John Kubicek would like to hear Colton sing a song by One Direction, since they've been all over the airwaves recently. That works for me, but I think it would be interesting for Colton to take on a song by Idol runner-up Adam Lambert. Any song by a former contestant is going to have vocal chops, and will work live because that's how they're used to performing. Now that I think about it, they have a pretty similar sound, in this song at least. Colton could also sing a OneRepublic song to great success. This is his week.
Skylar Laine - "Heart Like Mine" by Miranda Lambert
Skylar can sing a Carrie Underwood song, a Miranda Lambert song, anything she wants. This week is wide open for her.
Jessica Sanchez - "Someone Like You" by Adele
Should she? Have we had enough of Adele? Is Jessica the right person for the job? Should she just sing another Beyonce song this week and not make it weird?
Hollie Cavanagh - "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga
It's tough to sing a Lady Gaga song, especially without some vocal tricks, but I think Hollie has the vocal power to make it interesting. Maybe she can split the difference between an emotional ballad and last week's confusingly slow rendition of "What a Feeling."
Phillip Phillips - "Cooler Than Me" by Mike Posner
I would like to see Phillip Phillips chill down to the Mike Posner sound. He can growl this one out, and maybe we'll be able to understand most of the words this week.
Elise Testone - "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri
This would be a great song for Elise, but Colton will probably steal it from her and sing it. Colton will sing ALL THE SONGS! Elise could also do a Gaga song, one more like "You and I," though.
Joshua Ledet - "[Forget] You" by Cee Lo Green
Cee Lo would be an excellent match for Joshua's voice. Yes! Please sing this, Joshua, I would absolutely love it. However, I think the odds are good of someone singing some Bruno Mars this week, so it could be Joshua. Is "Just The Way You Are" too weak a song for his powerful voice? Please sing Cee Lo, it would be perfect.
