This week's episode finds our characters channeling Aretha. All they want is a little respect.
Morgan
After last week's power play with the Buy More-ians, Morgan finds himself in a bit of a pickle. Lester, in his mute glory, leads the rebellion against Buy More's newest assistant manager, and he isn't backing down. Hot door knobs, laxative-laced coffee, and glue-smeared chairs, pranks once reserved for crabby substitute teachers, unpleasant babysitters, and would-be burglars, become part of Morgan's daily life.
But the last straw falls when Morgan awakens inside the crane game. Seriously, how does that happen? Wisely, he enlists Casey's help in restoring order. Because John Casey doesn't command respect, he takes it. (Side note: Can we please start a list of Casey-isms?) Normally, Casey could care less, but Morgan appeals to his hate of insurgents and Casey takes on the challenge.
After promoting Casey as his lieutenant assistant manager, Morgan attempts to talk the team out of their sabotage in the home theater room. A few employees scurry out. The rest of them hurry away after being scared straight thanks to a nifty cigar trick by Casey. Only Jeff and Lester remain, but declare that things are not over as they walk out.
Footsie pajamas, check. Red stuffed animal, check. Casey's kidnapping and subsequent brainwashing of Lester, hilarious. For now, the plot to overthrow Morgan takes a time out, but what of Lester's Morgan loving? Creepy, to be sure, but how long will the effects last?
Chuck and Shaw
Shaw's the new guy on this "dysfunctional team" (his words, not mine), but he wants to ensure that Chuck is not a liability. The problem? Sarah and Casey coddle him too much. Let him out of the car for once! Chuck acts surprised, but I like where this is heading. Chuck has a tendency to get into sticky situations, but why can't he become a real spy? Shaw seems to think he is capable enough and wants to send Chuck on his first solo mission to Paris.
Sarah thinks he needs more time, but Chuck won't be denied the chance to prove his spy savvy. Armed with his trusty nunchucks and spy gadgetry, he strolls into first class, jazzy music playing in the background. As he sits, he adorably introduces himself to his seatmate Hannah, guest star Kristin Kreuk. They bond over drinks (shaken not stirred) and passenger stereotyping until he flashes on a Ring operative.
With a call to Shaw, he finds that his mission lies not in Paris, but on the plane. The man he flashed on, Hugo Panzer, has a CIA cryptokey that Chuck must intercept. After working out the faulty tranq pen, Chuck sprays some liquid into Hugo's mouth putting him to sleep. He heads down to the cargo hold and finds the key taped to a dead old man's hand. He eventually obtains the key after a polite patdown, but Hugo arrives after being shocked awake and wants the key back. Chuck tries to call Sarah for help, but Shaw refuses to let her answer. Chuck finally gets a hold of Casey who advises him to be himself, find a weapon, and flash. Easier said than done, but Chuck finds an Eli's epee (seems their stereotyping was right after all) and eventually knocks out the Ring operative with falling luggage.
Chuck and Hannah make nice at the airplane bar and tell the truth about what they're really doing there. However, the good times don't last because Hugo is back and Chuck has been poisoned! The flight attendant, also a Ring operative, takes Chuck to the cargo hold offering the antidote in exchange for the key. With some clever manipulation, Shaw enacts his plan to help Chuck. He orders Sarah to control the plane through a satellite link, and a forced lurch causes luggage to knock out the operatives leaving Chuck to drink the antidote and retrieve the key. Mission complete.
Along with the intel, the lockbox opened by the cryptokey reveals the secret of Shaw's past: a diamond ring belonging to his wife who was killed by a Ring agent five years ago.
For now, Shaw seems genuine in his actions. Chuck wants to be a spy, and Shaw wants to ensure that he possesses the confidence necessary to do the job. Not losing another spy, he asserts. It also seems that Shaw thinks he and Sarah are kindred spirits since they both fell in love with spies, but I'm not sure what to make of that yet.
Chuck, on the other hand, proved that he could accomplish something with a little help from the team. Surely a boost in his confidence as a spy, but there are more interesting things on the horizon. Namely, an intriguing woman named Hannah who has just entered the Buy More.
