'Cavemen' Executive Producer Not Discouraged by Show's Poor Critical Reception

The cast of ABC's CavemenCavemen, a comedy series born out of string of Geico commercials, has received poor reviews from numerous television critics, and the unfortunate thing is, the show has yet to begin airing.  Nevertheless, executive producer Will Speck, who was involved with the popular ad spots, still believes the show holds much promise.

“When we were making the commercials, we just felt like there were more stories to tell,” Speck told Contra Costa Times.  “And I think it starts in the purest place, which is us feeling like there's love and affection for these characters from us.  And I think, if we do our jobs right, people will follow suit.”

ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson also expressed his confidence in Cavemen, saying viewers are always ready to embrace something different when it comes to the comedy genre.

“The good thing about comedies is that they've been broken for a few years, so people are willing to take chances,” McPherson said.

The show follows three cavemen as they try to overcome prejudice and racial stereotypes in modern-day Atlanta.  The pilot was panned by critics, which is why producers decided to revamp the series, starting with the cast.

Tim Brooks, a television historian and co-author of The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, said the negative buzz generated by critics and media buyers alike can actually work to the show's advantage, considering it gets the public talking about the series.

“Having a show with an off-the-wall concept that can be described in one line attracts immediate attention.  Even if it's negative attention, that in itself is not necessarily a bad thing,” Brooks told the Contra Costa Times.  He did note, however, that while the show's reviews and unusual concept may catch viewer interest, the best way for Cavemen to gain success is to continuously deliver something unexpected.

“You can only live off that title for the first 10 minutes or so,” he said.  “But then you've got to throw the audience a curveball and/or be better than anticipated.”

Cavemen will premiere on Tuesday, October 2, at 8pm.
