Cane: Episode 9 "The Exile" Recap
Tuesday, November 20, 2007
This episode of Cane is all about Alex's distractions. Duque Rum, and his family relationships, suffer as Alex has to deal with the fallout from his prior decisions.
We're starting this episode in the Vega bedroom. Alex is feeling frisky and he makes the move on his wife. At first she looks and acts interested, but then ... Later as she's getting ready for an evening for her fund raiser, she looks to get reassurance from Alex that he'll be there and he promises that he'll show up later. He has to go to a fund raiser for Sen. Finch still trying to get that ethanol bill passed.
Pancho calls the house to talk to Alex. He asks Alex to stop by and talk, but Alex blows him off. Pancho is not happy because he told Alex to concentrate on the Rum business, and to give up on the ethanol thing.
Duque Rum is being loaded on trucks belonging to Santa Cruz trucking and they get on the road. The trucks are stopped by armed gunmen and the drivers are murdered. The next morning the newspapers are calling it a mob hit and the press descends on Duque Rum headquarters.
Pancho comes in to the office and is ticked off that Alex isn't around to take care of the fallout. He's also mad that he didn't know that Duque Rum had changed trucking companies. Then when he finds out that Alex isn't around because he's at a meeting with Sen. Finch, he gets madder.
Isabel is having a hard time with one of the artists to be featured for the fund raiser. He's a typical moody artist, and he has a very inflated sense of self. He wants to be 'the' featured artist, with his artwork on the cover of the program, on the t-shirts, etc. He won't sign the contract until his demands are met. She's not prepared to give in. He also seems to have a thing for her it seems by the some of the comments he makes to her.
At Alex's meeting with Sen. Finch, who happens to be a very attractive lady, she tells him that she really isn't interested in ethanol right now, she's interested in Alex and what he can do for her. She's up for reelection soon and wants to know how he can help her keep her seat. Then they can talk about the ethanol. She suggests that they have a working weekend in Washington to talk about the possibilities.
After his meeting with Sen. Finch, Alex meets with Ramon. He tells Ramon that they have to end their trucking deal. Ramon tells him that he didn't get Alex into anything, Alex got him into something. His people found out that the people that attacked his guys were Israelis I think this was in retaliation for Ramon's men taking out Henry's partners. Ramon tells Alex that this is not over, that he owes the widows vengeance.
When Alex finally shows up at the office, he and Frank get into it. Frank throws it in his face that he hired gangster truckers and tells him that both he and Pancho are upset that Alex has connected the family name to organized crime.
Henry goes to Isabel for help. He's still trying to get Terry to give him the time of day. He wonders if he wants her because he can't seem to get her. Isabel just laughs at him. When he goes back to the distillery, they challenge each other's ability to drink. They both end up drunk and they make love.
Frank and Ellis go to the Duque lawyer to help Ellis with her legal problems. The stupid lawyer is a big mouth and he lets slip Alex's plans for Cuban land and how he found out about Samuels Canadian front.
Alex is called to the senator's office. She questions him about the killings and tells him that they need to postpone their working weekend until this all dies down.
Ellis convinced Isabel to give in to the artist's demands. When she goes to tell him, she finds out that he's switched the picture that he wants to submit for auction. The new artwork is a beautiful drawing of Isabel. She also finds and admires his sketches of her. She later receives one of the sketches with a personal note.
At night, the Israelis that carried out the hit of Ramon's guys are leaving a club. They get into their car and when they start it up, it blows up.
Alex is called to the US Attorney's Office. When he gets there, he sees Joe Samuels. The US attorney tells both of them that he is not interested in their little feud. He tells them both that the Samuels will immediately divest himself of all the Cuban land and pay a $1.5M fine. Alex is upset that this is all that will happen and correctly surmises that the lawyer spilled something that helped Ellis make this sweetheart deal.
Since Alex isn't around, Frank and Pancho are working out the details for an important distributor meeting that Alex seems to have blown off. Alex is at home with Artie playing wii and receives a call threatening his family.
Alex meets with Ramon and is upset about the threats. He brokers a meeting between the two sides and they agree to a business agreement that will cease hostilities ... at least for now.
Alex finally show up to work, late for the meeting. He goes on the offense and goes off on Frank about the lawyer leaking information to Ellis to help her case. As they argue with each other, Pancho walks in and sends Frank off. Pancho tells Alex that he's disappointed with how Alex has allowed his vendetta against Samuels to almost ruin the company. He tells him that Frank is handling the meeting and tells Alex to take some time off ... to go home.
And the plot thickens. It seems that the Ellis/Joe feud was all for show. They meet in his home and he commends her for a job well done. He comments that she's got Frank wrapped around her little finger, and reminds her not to get personally involved.
Next time on Cane, temptation abounds. Alex is tempted by some floozy in his hotel room on his Caribbean vacation, Jaime is tempted by some strippers at his bachelor party, and Isabel is tempted by the artist.
