Remember the ticked off look on Isabel's face last week when she found that gun in the safe? Well, she stewed about it all night and confronted him when he woke up in the morning. He came up with some bs excuse for having it, but I'm not sure she bought it. They are having some serious trust issues lately and he's not helping.
At the Samuels', their hired PI reports on his surveillance of Alex. They aren't happy that he has no dirt on Alex nor has he found any connection to the Quinones murder. They tell him that he'd better make some luck in finding some information.
Pancho gets Frank and Alex together in the sugar fields and confronts them about the rift between them. He tells them that whatever it is, they need to put it behind them because families must have trust and loyalty. After Pancho leaves, Frank tells Alex that Ellis won't be an issue between them.
While having a business meeting about the need to increase their sugar production, Alex receives a call from his police friend, Vince Grasso. Grasso tells him that they've found a body in the Everglades that he believes to be Quinones and that he needs Alex to come down and identify the body since Alex is one of the last people to have seen him.
Frank and Alex try to convince Pancho of the need to mechanize the sugar cane cutting. They tell him that the ethanol subsidy could depend on it. Pancho says absolutely not, he will not put his workers out of work. That's not how they make their rum. Alex pulls rank and says that as CEO, he has to consider it.
Henry has concerns about getting more business into his club and is told that he'll need to come up with $60,000 to get this Casey Clark in the club who supposedly is very influential. If she comes to the club and likes it, she'll get all her friends to come in yada yada. Oh, and we find out that tonight's musical guest is Nicole Scherzinger and the Pussycat Dolls.
Isabel is talking to Jaime about his wedding. She convinces him to delay it until after boot camp so that she has time to plan a proper Cuban wedding. Meanwhile, Pancho meets with his attorney, admits his condition, and adds a condition to his will that in case of disagreement in the business, Amalia will have final say, and if Amalia is no longer alive, then Isabel has it.
Alex calls a meeting to discuss the mechanization. He admits to the siblings that Pancho is against it. Frank is in agreement that it's necessary, but in private Isabel tells Alex that she's totally against it. She will honor her father's wishes.
After identifying Quinones at the morgue, Alex goes to the firing range with the gun. The Samuels' PI is also there and engages Alex in conversation about the merits and accuracy of a 9mm. He then proceeds to fire at Alex's target and walks away ... weird ...
Amalia tells Pancho that she knows that his cancer is back and asks him how long the doctor has given him. He tells her six months, but tells her not to worry, that the doctor is wrong again. They hug and murmur in Spanish. This is a very well acted, very touching scene between a husband and wife.
The Pussycat Dolls perform in Henry's club. Once again, underaged Katie has been allowed in. This Casey Clark person also shows up and Henry presents her a bottle of Duque rum and tells her that he hopes she enjoys herself. Katie is a fan and is introduced. She goes off with Casey and her entourage and Casey smashes her car while drinking and driving. In the club, Henry is talking to Nicole. They're friends and it seems they used to date. While they were laughing and talking, Henry's investors come up and interrupt them for introductions. It was very awkward and uncomfortable for Nicole. They are very pushy and I think we're seeing the first fissures in this business relationship.
Isabel and Alex argue over the mechanization issue. He accuses her of making business decisions based on emotions. She throws it in his face that Pancho's wishes may not mean the same thing to him because he's not a real Duque. Not cool, Isabel ... Alex storms out.
Alex and Frank also discuss this issue. They decide to enlist Henry's support and vote for mechanization. While they are discussing it, however, Isabel sees Henry laying on the beach and gets him to agree to vote with her. There is some banter about him laying around during the day, but he tells her that he works nights, this is his off time.
Henry also gets into this same discussion about his laying around with Frank. This time, it's not so playful and Frank calls Henry a spoiled Cuban Prince. Henry tells Frank that he works until 5am, so get off his back. And he kind of throws at him that, yeah, he'll vote the way Frank tells him to.
Grasso called Alex and asked him if he owned a 9mm handgun, when told yes, Grasso tells Alex that he needs to produce the weapon now. Grasso goes to the Vega house to retrieve the gun, and tells Alex about the coroner finding a 9mm slug in Quinones corpse. Alex gets attitude about Grasso disrespecting him, but Grasso told him that if he didn't hold him in such esteem, they'd be doing this at the station and not at his house. Isabel is in the background eavesdropping on this entire conversation.
At the Duque family dinner, the discussion turns to the mechanization issue, surprise surprise. Alex says that he, Frank and Henry vote for it, but Isabel says au contraire, Henry is voting against it with her. Isabel says it's an issue of respect for Pancho and Alex says it's a business issue. When Frank tries to get Henry to admit he's voting with the guys, Henry throws it back to Frank that he's a spoiled Cuban prince and that he's giving his vote to Isabel. Things quickly deteriorate, I mean get really ugly, and Pancho leaves the room.
Amalia finally has enough and goes off on them all about their behavior. She tells them that she will not stand for this dissension in the home of a man fighting for his life. They get quiet real quickly at that. She tells them that the doctors have given Pancho 6 months. When Pancho walks back in, it very apparent to him that Amalia has spilled the beans and he's not very happy about it.
They sit down, again, to discuss this mechanization. Alex says that he's dropping the issue and Pancho tells him that it would dishonor him to drop it out of pity. They vote and Alex and Frank vote for, Isabel votes against. When they ask Henry, he tells Pancho that he'll vote however he wants him to. Pancho tells him to grow up, start acting like a mature adult, vote for himself. He votes for mechanization. Pancho then asks that he be allowed to tell the workers that it will be their last harvest.
Jaime tells Isabel that now they have to move up the wedding and she agrees. Henry tells Katie that he knows about the car crash and that from now on she will no longer be allowed in the club because she's too young, and he'll no longer cover for her with her parents. I guess he's taking his dad's counsel to grow up to heart.
Alex looks upon Pancho and Amalia softly talking to each other in the Duque dining room and goes home to Isabel. He tells her that he's sorry about her father. She turns to him, in tears, and tells him that Pancho is his father, too.
Last moving scene is of Pancho telling the workers. When he's done, he joins them in the cutting of the cane. After a slight hesitation, Alex and Frank shuck their suit jackets and join him.
Next week on
Cane, Alex may have to answer to his actions regarding Quinones.
