American screenwriter and actor Evan Handler was born on January 10, 1961 in New York City. He is known not only for his acting, but for his survival and recovery from acute myeloid leukemia, and he remains an active spokesman and advocate for leukemia patients. Evan Handler has performed onstage in Broadway productions such as
I Hate Hamlet,
Six Degrees of Separation, and
Brighton Beach Memoirs. He has also appeared in numerous television series, among them
The West Wing,
Friends,
Law & Order,
Sex and the City,
CSI: Miami,
Lost,
Six Feet Under, and
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Aside from his acting and his leukemia advocacy, he has authored and published the books
Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors and
It’s Only Temporary: The Good and Bad News of Being Alive.
Charlie is played by Evan Handler in Showtime’s upcoming television comedy series
Californication. He is writer Hank’s agent and best friend, who lives his life responsibly and on the straight and narrow path. He cannot comprehend why Hank refuses to kick his numerous bad habits and just learn to settle down with a stable and decent woman. However, married Charlie is secretly envious of Hank’s swinging existence, and Charlie’s own antics later on will inevitably tinge his sanctimonious tone with hypocrisy.
