Life imitates art just like in the case of
David Duchovny who is now having trouble with sex in real life just like his novelist character Hank Moody whose libido often leads him into trouble on Showtime's
Californication. According to
People, David Duchovny has entered a rehabilitation center for sex addiction.
Duchovny, 48, has been married to actress Tea Leoni since 1997. They have two children, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.
"I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction," the
Californication actor said in an exclusive statement to
People. "I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."
Duchovny, who perhaps is best known for his role as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder on
The X-Files TV series and its most recent big screen adaptation
The X-Files: I Want to Believe, has never been one to shy away from the topic of sex. However, he has fended off rumors of sexual addiction throughout the 1990s.
In an interview with
Best Life Magazine in May, Duchovny emphasized that for a married man, experiencing lustful feelings for other women is harmless as long as they remain just feelings.
"There's nothing wrong with acknowledging the panoply of life's rich experience," he said. "You can't control your mind. Why would you want to? You can't feel guilty about being alive, about being a man, about feeling attracted. You can only control your actions."
Meanwhile, Showtime, which will start airing the second season of
Californication on September 28, has already expressed its support for Duchovny and his family.
“All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time,” a rep for Showtime said in a statement released to Access Hollywood.
