Being the mother of the Chosen One can't be hard, as Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland) realized over the course of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yet before she knew of her daughter's secret life, Joyce was an ordinary mother, desperate to keep her kid safe. In the season 2 episode “School Hard,” Spike and Drusilla's gang invade the school on Parent/Teacher Night, making it all the more difficult for Buffy to do her duty without being caught.

In a surprise turnaround, just as Spike was about to do in the Slayer, he gets knocked out by an ax swung by Joyce, who then says, “Get the hell away from my daughter.” Buffy may be the Summers who normally saves the day, but this time, when her daughter needed her the most, Joyce stepped up.
