'Brothers & Sisters' Actress Urges Fans to Give Her Controversial Storyline a Chance

It's no secret that
Emily VanCamp has already embraced her controversial storyline on
Brothers & Sisters after learning that her character Rebecca is not a member of the Walker clan. The season finale's kiss between her onscreen alter ego and her no-longer-brother Justin (
Dave Annable) has certainly left fans buzzing at the possibility of a budding romance between two characters that were once thought to be related. With the filming of the fourth season of ABC dramedy underway, the 21-year-ld actress is encouraging fans to “Give it a chance.”
“I don't think it is as bad as everyone is making it out to be,” she told the
Boston Herald. “These two characters didn't grow up together. They weren't playing in the sandbox together. They didn't go on family vacations. Now that she's not related to him by blood, it kind of makes sense.”
Although this twist in VanCamp's character plot has been in the works for quite some time, this was not how her storyline was originally supposed to go. The former
Everwood actress was called in for the part of Rebecca without an audition or a screen test and in due course, everyone on the show started to see the undeniable chemistry between VanCamp and Annable onscreen.
“We had no choice but to touch on the fact that Rebecca and Justin had some sort of chemistry. It was an ongoing joke for a while that these two characters were more compatible as young lovers than as siblings. I'm really glad they are handling it in a non-incestuous way,” she said.
“It's a lot of opportunity for me as an actress. I'm really happy with it. It's creating a bit of controversy and getting people talking,” she added.
The cast and crew of
Brothers & Sisters have already filmed the fall season premiere of the show and are presently shooting the rest of the season through June.
